| | A few weeks ago I posted that I'd produced what was likely the last publications of 2021. I was wrong. Over the last two weeks I was able to write and publish STAMPED, a minimalist poem-essay on subject of rubber-stamped publications. STAMPED pays homage to Barbara Caruso, a painter, writer, publisher, and soul-mate to poet and bookseller Nelson Ball. Through her rubber-stamped chapbook press, presspresspress Barbara produced tiny publications in tiny print runs. I was lucky enough to be gifted nearly the entire collection which was published in the late 80s and early 90s. Despite their tiny size, they have become a huge inspiration to my own work. Her books are all delicate and well thought out. The amount of detail and work put into each copy is it’s quite apparent. The paper used in the production of STAMPED was donated to Puddles of Sky Press by the estate of Nelson Ball and Barbara Caruso. It is the same paper and card stock she used for her presspresspress chapbooks. I feel so lucky and honored to have the opportunity to publish chapbooks with these materials. The Man with the Spider Scar is a collage poem sourced from two pocket Westerns by Louis L'Amour. By snagging brief snippets of text the poem was slowly composed over the span of a few years. Broken into fifty minimalist pieces, the poem tells the story of a nameless horse thief and his surreal, and sometimes bloody search for an untouched land. There was in me a quality I never trusted. A dull fury paused in the prime of its life. Utterly hackles. Complete fists. A quiet sort of man, no older than myself. Printed at Coach House Printing, this is the second perfect bound book published by Puddles of Sky Press. Printed on 70lb Zephyr Laid paper, wrapped with a textured 80lb card stock cover, measuring 4.25 by 5.5 inches, and 68 pages in length, The Man with the Spider Scar a small book that packs a big punch. Written on one of her morning lakeside runs, Gord Downie Pier (winter) is a minimalist poem of observation by Allison Chisholm. Interpreted by publisher Michael e. Casteels, the poem is spread across four pages to create a poem-object, and a tactile reading experience. This rubber-stamped, and machine-bound chapbook was printed in an edition of sixty copies.
